Over the decades since the invention of the motion picture, the industry has been divided between two approaches; the movie with a message and the movie with a happy ending. The European Film Industry (they don’t know from  movies!) tended to opt for the former whereas Hollywood generally took the approach more popular at the box office. Often novels and true historical events were adapted to help bring in the much needed dollars. In this way tragic stories such as Pocahontas  were retold minus their sad endings. There are a few Hollywood blockbusters that didn’t abide by the rule but it is safe to say that in the future they will make amends. Here is what a rewrite of the end of Titanic might look like.

The scene. The Titanic is sinking.  – All looks lost. Jack (Leonardo diCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslow)  take a last walk to the mast. n the background Celine Dion is at it once again – there’s no stopping the Canadians!

Suddenly

Jack (shouting) “Rose what’s that coming towards us from beyond the mist? Is it another iceberg? Is it a German U-boat? Is it a bird? Is it a plane is it…”

Rose: “No silly, you lower class idiots don’t know anything. It’s Nemo and Flipper followed by a school of whales. We’re saved.”

Jack:   “But what are those weird sounds I can hear?”

Rose: “You are ignorant aren’t you, don’t you know when it’s the  time in the movie for a musical song and dance number?”!

Jack: “You don’t mean?”

Rose: “Yes”

Splosh!

Rose: (to the sounds of yet another rendering of the Titanic theme song) Jack why have you jumped off the boat just when we’re about to be saved?

Jack: (in the water, pointing to Celene Deon riding on the back of Nemo) “Enough is enough, I can’t take it anymore. I promise I’ll be back for the sequel.” He swims off into the distance to the tune of – yeh well you know the rest. Or do you.

A scream is heard in the distance followed by a large splash.

Rose: “Nemo,my hero, you finally managed to get rid of her.”

Nemo: “Yes, even us fish have our pride.

THE END
