Not the Messiah

First there was the TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the most revolutionary TV event to hit the BBC since Jesus. Then there were the books – The Big Red Book was actually blue. The record albums – you know those black round things with the hole in the middle that aren’t donuts – were equally as original. The first album, aptly called Another Monty Python Record,, boasted the cover of Beethoven’s #2 Symphony in D Minor with the real title scribbled in the corner. The original album had a third groove so that when you played the first side you were never sure what you would hear. Then came the live concert And Now For Something Entirely Different, which begat the movies. Monty Python and the Holy Grail  starred real coconuts substituting for  horses soon to become a broadway musical called Spamalot. Which only left musical Eric Idle – who hates to be idle -only one recourse. Take Brian Cohen the crusified messiah from The Life of Brian and retell his story as an oratorio with the help of Spamalot partner John Du Prez, a hundred strong choir, 5 soloists, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, ex Python members, lumberjacks, Mexicans in sombreros, bagpies, three sheep and Bob Dylan. When you splurge you splurge. Who are we kidding here, you’ll either love every minute of it or hate the whole thing – but that has been Python’s cup of tea all along.

Some of the more interesting song titles from the performance are:

There Shall Be Monsters

What have the Romans ever done for us?

O God You Are So Big (quoting a scene from the Python’s  Meaning of Life)

Woe Woe Woe!

We Love Sheep.

What Have the Romans Ever Done For Us?

The People’s Front of Judea (parodying the PLO)

I Want To Be A Girl.

Hail To The Shoe!

Amourdeus. ( A vocal sex experience that must be seen or heard!)

These are of course accompanied by two favourites but I won’t spoil your surprise – though I bet you can guess anyway.

A fun time is had by one and all.  To quote the bard himself (Eric Idle that is) “It is rare you get to be silly on a mass scale.”
