The Wizard of Was: Oz is 70 years strong
The Wizard of Oz is now celebrating its 70th anniversary.
Here are a few facts you might not know about the most popular family film of all time, some interesting interpretations of Over the Rainbow, and a couple of parodies.
7 Facts You Probably don’t Know about the Wizard of Oz
1. The part of the wizard was originally offered to W.C. Fields who asked for too much money, $100,000, and wouldn’t accept a compromise of $75,000. The part went eventually to Frank Morgan.
2. The producer considered using the real M.G.M. lion for the part of the coward and dubbing the dialog.
3. After the success of the movie, M.G.M. planned a sequel, Back to Oz, but because of budget concerns it was made 46 years later, putting the movie into the Guinness Book of Records for the longest period of time between an original movie and its sequel.
4. The original cut of the movie ran 120 minutes but was considered too long for children and 20 minutes found their way to the editing floor. Over the Rainbow was almost cut from the movie.
5. Judy Garland was 16 when she made the movie and already showing signs of womanhood was forced to wear a corset to hide her breasts.
6. The part of Dorothy was meant for Shirley Temple who was much more popular at the time and more fitting for the part of the young girl. Temple, however, was not a talented enough singer.
7. The name for Oz came to the author, Frank Baum when looking at his filing cabinet and saw A-N and O-Z.
Over the Rainbow Interpretations
Israel Kamakawiwo was a Hawaiian Ukulele player who’s medley of Over the Rainbow and what a wonderful world brought him popularity outside of Hawaii. His obesity was eventually his downfall and he died in 1997 at the age of 36.
This rendition of Over the Rainbow, sung by a six year girl, caught the hearts of the English in the Television contest Britain’s Got Talent.
