The Mickey Mouse Facelift
The New York Times informs us that “Concerned that Mickey has become more of a corporate symbol than a beloved character for recent generations of young people, Disney is taking the risky step of re-imagining him for the future…….The first glimmer of this will be the introduction next year of a new video game, Epic Mickey, in which the formerly squeaky clean character can be cantankerous and cunning, as well as heroic, as he traverses a forbidding wasteland.”
This is a risky venture for sure taking into account the fact that other such attempts to tamper with icons like those of Coca Cola and Tropicana caused great embarrassment to the mother companies. Recently the creators of the Simpsons transformed Marge Simpson into a sex symbol by placing her on the cover of Playboy Magazine (see my blog Marge Simpson on the cover of Playboy)
Mickey wasn’t always as innocent looking, as can be seen here in a rare 1935 cartoon.
In a parallel venture Disney has kicked off a project to rethink the character’s personality entirely. Not only will they change the way the mouse looks, They will also reinvent the way he walks and talks, both classic Disney trademarks. It remains to be seen which of the designs proposed by Playboy, Nintendo, Tim Burton and animators behind Up is adopted.
