When I first started blogging I subscribed to a couple of the most popular bloggers around to try and understand what it’s all about. Seth Godin’s blog is way up there in the top ten list. Recently he wrote about the most popular wikipedia articles of 2009 and the results are quite shocking in their way. Wikipedia started out with the notion of becoming the first online encyclopedia written for the people by the people.  Now that it has become the most popular source of information on the planet it is interesting to see what people use it for. What do the masses really want to read about? What interests the real world?

Looking down the top 100 list the results are far from promising. If you thought of geography history and the major sciences then think again.
I wasn’t surprised to find entries about newly deceased celebrities  Michael and Farrah or the die hards: Beatles but then I found the list full with everything connected  with Twilight and began realizing that Wikipedia is on it’s way to replacing TV Guide and the gossip magazines too.

Surprisingly in fourth place, following the Beatles and Michael Jackson and above Youtube,  and Barak Obama I found Favicon.ico. Go figure! Favicon
for those of you kind enough to ask is an online application that designs the little icons that are situated to the left of your url like this icon found on google Blogger sites..
Why is this the fourth most important item that the population of the world wants to know about?
Altogether 12 entries in the Wiki top 100 deal with computers and the internet including the term wiki itself which holds the #1 spot!!!
Out of the entire top 100 articles only 30 had any real educational value – this on a site that managed to put Encyclopedia Britannica out of business. This got me thinking how the internet is reshaping our world behind our backs. If George Orwell got us worrying how the major governments could control our lives it is now fair to say that t the people who really matter today are  Larry Page and Sergey Brin ( the founders of Google), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Jimmy Whale (Wikipedia). What they say goes, what they market sells. If Amazon has the ability to turn any book into a best seller and  turn any 16 year old singer into a mega star. Wikipedia, of course, can literally change history. Together these companies control all the information the world needs to know. They  know more about us than our spouses, parents or children ever will. Google alone manages at least 15 of the top 50 web sites worldwide. It goes without saying that what they chose to promote will form our tomorrow.
