Julie and Julia  is a cinematic celebration. It reminds us why we go to the movies, what we need to enjoy our lives and of course why us folk spend hour upon hour in front of the computer, late at night, writing a blog which will hopefully be read by someone out there who we don’t even know and will probably get no response from. When Meryl Streep enjoys playing a role it shows and the world is a happier place. She is so good as Julia Child that I can almost forgive her for Mama Mia (please, whatever you do, don’t, I repeat don’t, go and see that movie. It makes Paris Hilton, Britney  and Madonna’s film excursions almost Oscar worthy).

This being said I have to disagree with some of the critics. This movie needs the two stories. They work well together and a simple bio about Julia Child would be boring. Secondly the belief that Child’s cooking is dated and unhealthy, though obviously correct judging from the amount of butter it calls for, didn’t prevent her and her husband from living to a ripe old ages – Julia died in 2004 two days prior of her 92nd birthday.
More than a bio of Julia Child’s rise to fame, Julie and Julie is about two women’s decisions to accomplish something. Julie Powell brings to the big screen the inner thoughts of a blogger and what gets us going. Writing for an invisible audience is often frustrating. Is there really anyone out there reading this or am I writing to an audience of one? Julie and Julia’s perseverance is a lesson for all of us.
Definately a great movie – another Oscar Streep moment.
