Let me start off by saving that I’m a great fan of Sting and have been since Police, and of course Dylan goes without saving. Sting and Dylan have one thing in common, they keep reinventing themselves. Neither are perfect but both have brought us enough gems over the decades to forgive their faults. Now both have fallen into the well of kitch and can easily be mistaken for Bing Crosby. Is the world really ready for Zimmerman’s version of Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas? or a caroling Gordon Sumner (yeh that is Sting’s real name). Sting’s  If on a Winter’s Night  and Dylan’s Christmas in the Heart are in my opinion wasted effforts. Rock and pop history has had its fill of Christmas songs – several being put together to help poverty, Bob Geldof’s  Do they know it’s Christmas is one of the more successful ones. Still, every new album by these two megastars is a worldwide event, why waste it on a Christmas album. Leave that to Rod Stewart, he seems to own the kitch remake niche single handed (sorry Barry Manilow you’re only a close second). To be fair at least Sting’s effort seems to have some redeeming harmonies, Dylan’s fiasco is really one big joke, I would have much preferred yet another release on unpublished jams from the basement tapes. I am deeply disappointed.
