Amongst the thousands of great or not so great albums around are hidden some incredible songs that you may never have heard. Here are five.

1. Deep Purple Help From very early days before Deep Purple more or less invented ROCK. Their first album, simply titled Shades of Deep Purple contained a mixture of original stuff (notably Hush) and covers such as Hey Joe (more famously covered by Hendrix), I’m so glad and this great rendition of Help.

2. Alvin Lee The Bluest Blues. Alvin Lee is most familiar for leading the blues rock group Ten Years after and his  stunning performance at Woodstock. His love for the blues, however, pushed him to record the Pure Blues album with George Harrison on slide guitar and this amazing song – one of the best blues songs ever.
3. Traffic Uninspired. Traffic was formed in 1967 Steve Winwood Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason and Chris Wood. There music was a fusion of rock and jazz  and produced classic albums with catchy names such as Mr Fantasy, John Barleycom Must Die and The Low Spark of the High Healed Boys. The hauntingly beautiful (Sometimes I feel so) Uninspired closed the first side of the album.
4. Sandy Denny One More Chance. Sandy Denny is mostly remembered as the lead singer of the folk / rock group Fairport Convention and her stunning vocals on the classic Who Knows Where the Time Goes. Her solo rendition of One More Chance is a gem.
5. Crosby Stills and Nash Wooden Ships This song was jointly written by members of CSN (Crosby and Stills) and Jefferson Airplane (Paul Kantner) which explains why there are two oficial original versions, one recorded by each group. The anti war song tells the story of a bunch of survivors of a nuclear war.
