Susan Boyle – A wild horse or just another stray nag?
It would seem that more words have been written about Susan Boyle in the last few months than about the nuclear showoff in Iran, which seems to say something about our priorities. The modern day version of Cinderella is flawed by the smell of opportunism but there seems to be a world consensus regarding the need for a new hero. Her long awaited single (in Facebook terms, anything longer than a couple of hours is long awaited) – Wild Horses is out and flooding the internet. Is it as good as expected? Well first it must be said that she and her backers are playing it safe. Wind Horses is an all time Stones classic, boasting numerous cover versions. It was a safe bet that however she fared it would be well received. Given that, Boyle’s rendition is quite moving and immediately brought to mind another ugly duckling’s early efforts - the original Funny girl herself Barbara Streisand.
If Susan and her shadow Simon Cowell play their cards right she could very well follow in Streisand’s footsteps though she might be forced to lose a few lbs on the way.
Only time will tell whether the latest reality show, overnight success story is here for the run or just another passing event. It will be interesting to see if the full album, due to be released in late November, fulfills Boyle’s dreams and her audience’s expectations. I am hoping that the album will contain a few original songs and not just yet another collection of sweet orchestrated covers.
